Alessandro Carletti was born in Rome and studied photography and painting. Since 2008, he has worked regularly with director Damiano Michieletto on productions such as Il trittico (Theater an der Wien), Don Carlos (Vienna State Opera), Il viaggio a Reims (De Nederlandse Opera, Amsterdam), the double feature Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci (Royal Opera House in London, Best Opera Production at the Laurence Olivier Awards), Rigoletto (Dutch National Opera, revival at Teatro La Fenice), and Aida (Bavarian State Opera in Munich).

He was also involved as lighting designer in productions such as La Damnation de Faust (Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, Premio Abbiati for best production 2017), Luisa Miller (Teatro dell'Opera), The Merry Widow (Teatro La Fenice in Venice), Don Pasquale (Opéra national de Paris), world premiere of Animal Farm by Alexander Raskatov (Dutch National Opera), The Maid of Orleans and A Midsummer Night's Dream (Theater an der Wien), Nabucco (Verdi Festival in Parma), Lucrezia Borgia (Teatro Comunale di Bologna). His most recent works include Rigoletto (Teatro Petruzzelli, Bari) and Bluebeard's Castle/Il Tabarro (Teatro dell'Opera, Rome).

In 2015, Carletti won the Knight of Illumination Award for Guillaume Tell at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

At the Komische Oper Berlin, he worked with director Barrie Kosky on productions such as Semele (2018), Candide (2018) and La bohème (2019).
