Marzena Diakun
The Polish conductor Marzena Diakun impresses with her immense temperament, her confidence, energy and the detailed power of her baton. As 2nd prize winner of two major international conducting competitions (Prague Spring Competition 2007 and Fitelberg Conducting Competition 2012), she concentrates on orchestral and choral works by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and Shostakovich as well as the greatest composers of her country: Penderecki, Lutoslawski, Karlowicz and Szymanowski. Her interpretations of French and Bohemian masters are highly regarded and her performances are described as remarkably balanced, finely nuanced and deeply felt. She knows how to bring out density, expressiveness and detail from an orchestra with her mastery and the height of her gesture.
In the 2024/25 season, she returns to her already well-known orchestras such as the Komische Oper Berlin, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and establishes new relationships with other orchestras such as the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Her latest recording of Brahms' works for choir and orchestra (IBS label) with the Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid, whose artistic director and chief conductor she was until summer 2024, was highly praised by the press.
The new relationship with Ensemble Intercontemporain is the culmination of two decades of dedication to performing new works by numerous Spanish, Dutch, Austrian and Polish composers. Her recording Polish Heroines of Music (PWM label) is a remarkable example of her savoir-faire and commitment.
She is herself a professor and mentor at the Wroclaw University of Music and can look back on the inspiration and support of great conductors such as Kurt Masur, Pierre Boulez and Marin Alsop.
