Head of Dramaturgy
Johanna Wall
Johanna Wall has been chief dramaturge of the Komische Oper Berlin since the 2022/23 season. She already worked here as a dramaturge under artistic director Barrie Kosky from 2012 to 2018. As opera director, she headed the opera department of the Lucerne Theater (CH) with artistic director Benedikt von Peter from 2018 to 2021.
In addition to opera, she has worked in the fields of drama, music theater, dance and performance. Her path led her from engagements at festivals (Munich Biennale for New Music Theater, SPIELART Festival, China Fest, Berlin) to the Landestheater Tübingen, where she directed the Festival 9 for 9.11, the Theater and Orchestra of the City of Heidelberg and the Oldenburg State Theater, where she took over the management of opera dramaturgy in 2007/08.

She has worked with directors such as Barrie Kosky, Kirill Serebrennikov, Herbert Fritsch, Lydia Steier and Lisa Stöppler, in acting with Anna Bergmann, Bettina Bruinier, Jan Christoph Gockel, Krystyn Tuschhoff and Nina Gühlstorff, in dance with the choreographers Marcel Leemann (Physical Dance Theater) and Jan Pusch as well as with the performance groups proT (Munich), Interobang (Berlin), Mamalian Diving Reflex (Toronto) and Third Angel (Sheffield).
As a lecturer, she teaches at the Free University of Berlin, the Ludwig Maximilian University and the Bavarian Theater Academy "August Everding" Munich, the University of Bayreuth, the Hildesheim University Foundation and the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University in Leipzig.
Together with the Selam Opera! project, she was awarded the BKM Prize for Cultural Education by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media in 2017.
Johanna Wall was born in Augsburg and studied dramaturgy at the Bavarian Theatre Academy "August Everding" as well as Japanese studies, comparative literature and market and advertising psychology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. During her school years she spent a year as a guest student in Fukuyama, Japan.
