Liesa van der Aa
Liesa Van der Aa is a composer, violinist, singer, director and actress. She was born and raised in the Brussels region and has been active in the Belgian art scene for more than 15 years.
Her work is situated in a polyphonic/multidisciplinary context that explores the boundaries between music, content, image and art.
Liesa Van der Aa made her debut as a singer on the pop music scene in 2012 with her solo album Troops. For Troops, she mixed only her voice and violin sounds with electronic sound effects. For this album, she received a nomination for Best Female Musician at the 2012 Music Industry Awards. Her second album WOTH, a musical triptych based on the death ceremony in ancient Egypt, followed in 2014.
Van der Aa is currently working on new music to be released in 2025!
In addition to pop music, Van der Aa has founded a new contemporary music ensemble called »One Trick Pony«. It is a music laboratory that explores the boundaries between minimalist new music, baroque music and jazz. It focuses on the visualisation of music and musicians on stage and in film.
Composing film music was a logical next step in Liesa's creative process. The collaboration with Belgian director Gilles Coulier began with his short films and culminated in the 2017 feature film Cargo. Van der Aa's work for Cargo was awarded an Ensor for Best Soundtrack. More recently, she wrote the music for the film Augure, Baloji's feature film debut, and for All The Pretty Little Horses by Michalis Karakatsanis.
Always creating new sounds and music, she released a conceptual non-funk/funk album called Easy Alice in February 2020. In parallel, Van der Aa created the short wave film I Can't Go Back To Yesterday: an experimental cross-over music film. The film won awards at the Phoenix Short Film Fes;val, Tokyo Interna;onal Short Film fes;val, Lonely Wolf Festival, LA Fashion fes;val, Independent Short Award and more. Liesa is currently working with the Dewaele brothers (SOULWAX) to release a solo album in 2025/2026. In summer 2024 she worked with Sandra Huller (Oscar nominated actress 2024) and La Horde at the Ruhrtriennale on a new musical composition about the work and life of PJ Harvey.
At the Komische Oper Berlin, she is staging the gig Theatre Riche Niche as part of the festival for brand new music theatre Schall&Rausch.
