In the mid-1980s, after more than 20 years in Germany, Tansel Akzeybek’s parents decided to return to their Turkish homeland, meaning young Tansel had to leave the city of his birth, Berlin, for Izmir. Back then, nobody thought that some day Tansel might earn his living as a singer. Professional footballer or dentist – those were the options that a young Tansel saw for his future. At just seven years of age, he was selected for the youth team of Altay Izmir. But an injury at 12 put a dampener on his childhood passion for football.
By the time he reached high school however, Tansel Akzeybek had already begun to sing, just because friends would always ask him to belt out some pop song or other. “The best thing about it was that you could really impress the girls with it”, he admits with a grin. His mother knew someone who taught music at a private music school. Which is where Tansel got his first real singing classes. “You’re a tenor!” his teacher told him, and encouraged Tansel to continue his studies. “An opera tenor – for me and my friends, that was some fat, sweaty man who people would make jokes about. I didn’t even know where the opera house in Izmir was. And now someone was telling me I might be able to make a career out of it!” But after just three months of singing classes, he was already giving his first concerts, and shortly thereafter, he passed the entrance examination for the conservatorium in Izmir. While he was still studying, he received a position in the chorus of the Izmir State Opera, where he also sang his first small solo parts.
During his military service, he decided to continue his studies in Germany. “But by that time I had forgotten all my German. Luckily though, it came back soon enough.” After finishing his studies in Lübeck, everything went really quickly: his first engagement at the Festspiele in Eutin was followed by spots at Theater Dortmund and then at Oper Bonn. Since 2012, he has been living back in his old home town. “Not long after I moved here, I found myself in Grünlingsweg in the south of Britz, where I lived as a child. Gradually, my earliest memories from my childhood started to come back to me. That’s really nice!
