Philip Bröking
Originally from Wuppertal, Philip Bröking began his theatre career in 1986 as co-founder of the TIC - Theatre in Cronenberg. At the beginning of his humanities studies at the University of Wuppertal, he was attracted by an engagement as head of the artistic operations office at the Stadttheater Pforzheim (1989). Four years later, Philip Bröking moved to the theatres of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck as a consultant to the general director and chief director. From 1997 to 2004, he worked at the legendary theatre in Bremen under the directorship of Klaus Pierwoß.
In his function as Artistic Director there, he was responsible for the cast planning of the music theatre, the overall planning of the four-part theatre, the compilation of an extensive guest performance programme and various special projects (including Die letzten Tage der Menschheit by Karl Kraus in a production by Hans Kresnik in the U-Bootbunker Valentin 1999, Millennium-Spektakel 1999/2000).
In the summer of 2004, Philip Bröking joined the Komische Oper Berlin, initially as Artistic Director. Since the 2005/06 season, he has been Opera Director at the theatre on Behrenstrasse. In addition to this position, Philip Bröking is a member of various competition juries such as the German National Singing Competition, the Competizione dell Opera and the international competition for stage direction and design ring award.
Since 2008, he has taught regularly at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, which appointed him professor in June 2023.
Philip Bröking took over the management of Komische Oper Berlin as co-director together with Managing Director Susanne Moser from summer 2022, in addition to his duties as opera director.
