Katrin Lea Tag

Katrin Lea Tag has made a name for herself in the world of opera as a stage and costume designer. Her designs are regularly realised in productions at opera houses throughout Europe.

She has worked with directors such as Barrie Kosky, Michael Thalheimer, Dimiter Gotscheff, Christof Loy, Lotte de Beer, Nadja Loschky and Hans Neuenfels. She made her debut with Barrie Kosky at Oper Frankfurt in 2010, where they worked together on productions such as Dido and Aeneas, Bluebeard's Castle,Salome and Carmen. The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma took over the production of Salome from Frankfurt in 2024. Katrin Lea Tag has also worked with Barrie Kosky at the Royal Danish Opera (Handel's Saul) and Den Norske Opera & Ballet (Dialogues des Carmélites).

At the Komische Oper Berlin she realised productions such as The Bassarids, Der Jahrmarkt von Sorotschinzi, The Monteverdi Trilogy, The Tales of Hoffmann and Falstaff together with Barrie Kosky. She has also designed the sets for Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites at the Glyndebourne Festival, Castor et Pollux at the English National Opera in London, Aus einem Totenhaus at the Hanover State Opera (theatre prize DER FAUST 2009) and Les Boréades at the Opéra de Dijon.

Katrin Lea Tag has also worked with the directors Claus Guth (Jephtha, Amsterdam and Paris), Holger Müller-Brandes and Matthew Wild (Porgy and Bess, Theater an der Wien), the latter production being awarded the Austrian Music Theatre Prize (best set).
Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, she won first prize at the Ring Award Graz in 1997. She was nominated for the International Opera Awards in 2019 and 2023 and was named ‘Stage Designer of the Year’ by the trade magazine ‘Opernwelt’ in 2020.

In the 2024/25 season, Katrin Lea Tag will be designing the stage set for the new production of Sweeney Todd at the Komische Oper Berlin.
